The “Orion” Armillary Sphere is a ring mounted dial of complex design featuring a full equatorial band and 4 rings marking the tropics of Capricorn & Cancer and arctic / antarctic circles. Made as standard with a plain rod gnomon but has the option of the addition of an “Arrow head and fletch“ (needs a narrow plinth for 55 degrees of latitude and above if fitted with arrow point and fletch)
The equatorial ring has a wide (38mm) dual time band showing Roman numerals for UTC (gmt in UK) and standard numerals for British Summer time. Includes personalised engraving of your choice around the outside of the wider horizon ring (38mm)and smaller text to the equatorial ring if required.(small additional cost £45.00) Individually made to site specific latitude and supplied with full installation and alignment instructions.

Just to say thank you for all your help in 'talking' me through buying the armillary. It was delivered today - all safe and sound. Dave, my partner, is very pleased with his 70th birthday gift. He has been very admiring not only its beauty but of the way it has been built - the thickness of the brass, the neat screws and joints, the little touches with the discs on the side. Since he has designed/built a couple of barometers himself such details are important to him and noted here with pleasure and appreciation.

Armillary Spheres are set to show “Local apparent time” This is when it is said to be noon when the sun is directly overhead. ( Its highest point in the sky when directly above the position of the viewer.) Time as it used to be before Greenwich mean time was introduced to standardise time across the country- thus allowing railway timetables to be aggregated.
The “Greenwich Time adjustment” EOT plate shows the seasonal adjustment of dial slow / dial fast, together with an adjustment for the dial’s position East or West of the Greenwich Meridian. If the dial is correctly aligned to solar noon (local apparent time) it will then be possible to ascertain correct Greenwich mean time.(Standardised time)
